Review: Strikers by Ann Christy
One hundred and twelve years after the fall, the Republic of Texas is built on two foundations: total freedom and total responsibility. Every citizen is free to do what they like, when they like, but they must take responsibility for each action. With such an ideal to strive for, life should be good and for many, it is. But there are flaws in every system and some people will always fall through the cracks.
Karas Quick has fallen through almost every crack there is. Her mother is an abusive alcoholic. Her father is a long missing Striker with four strikes against him and a date with Justice should he ever be found. At sixteen, she just has to survive two more years until she reaches majority without getting five strikes. But it’s getting harder not to fight back and earn yet another strike tattoo on her neck.
Everything changes one ordinary day watching the latest catch of smugglers and Strikers being returned for justice. Within their ranks is the father Karas can’t even remember. And he has a message
Strikers is an exciting and exceptional dystopia surrounding Karas and her friends' journey through abandoned cities and raging rivers with their pursuer hot on their heels.
If Strikers is any indication, Ann is a master at creating worlds. Her ability to tell you everything you need to know in order to picture the desolate world Karas live in, without dropping it all at once.
Little by little she creates an amazing picture in your head. You can honestly feel how parched their throats are with the lack or water, you can hear the rumbling of their stomachs and you can feel the panic when they bury themselves to avoid discovery.
Karas is a fantastic female lead, she's honest and she just feels real. She didn't intend for things to go as they did, but she adapted and made the best she could of a crappy situation. She made sure her friends were doing okay, emotionally as well. Turns out at that one point that they're separated that she really was the glue that held the five of them together and kept them more or less sane.
Karas's caring, brave and quick-witted. She's resourceful and surprisingly good at thinking things through to come up with the best plan of action. She's not so great at waking up and waking-up-ers should be aware, at least till she's had her morning coffee.
Strikers is a really great book, and if you've ever liked any dystopia I have no doubts that Strikes will be to your liking. It doesn't reach all the way to tip the scales to five starts, but it's coming very close.
