Friends Without Benefits can be read as a standalone, is a full length 120k word novel, and is book#2 in the Knitting in the City Series.

There are three things you need to know about Elizabeth Finney: 1) She suffers from severe sarcastic syndrome, especially when she's unnerved, 2) No one unnerves her like Nico Manganiello, and 3) She knows how to knit.

Elizabeth Finney is almost always right about everything: the musical merits of boy bands are undervalued by society, “benefits” with human Ken dolls are better without friendship, and the sun has set on her once-in-a-lifetime chance for true love. But when Elizabeth’s plans for benefits without friendship are disarmed by the irritatingly charismatic and chauvinistic Nico Manganiello- her former nemesis- she finds herself struggling to maintain the electric fence around her heart while avoiding electrocution or, worse, falling in love.

This is EXACTLY what I needed. I've read a ton of heavy paranormals lately and was looking for a sweet, swoony (is that a word? Otherwise it is now) romance and Friends Without Benefits was that perfect light fluffy read.

It made me laugh out loud, which isn't as easy as you might think. Anyone who read my reviews regularly will know that I giggle a lot and cry A LOT and while I usually find something funny in every book I very rarely laugh out loud. Penny managed to make me laugh and I am so grateful for that! Her writing is carefree and funny and she actually uses the word awesomesauce to describe something, but it goes amazingly well with the book and characters themselves.

I love how Penny does character development. Elizabeth truly believes you only have one shot at love in life, when you've loved and lost you can never love again. It's what she's been taught. She loved and lost when she was sixteen when her boyfriends passed away from cancer. That's why she struggles sooo much with what she feels for Nico, because she believes she could never love him and she would never survive losing him. You get to follow her battle to keep her heart intact and her head sane with the help of an awesome bunch of friends, she goes a little bit crazy there right before the end but s'all good.

Nico annoyed me to no end in the beginning but he grows on you and turns out to be that soft, adorable man with a tough exterior that all women secretly pine for. He so incredibly sweet it had to fan myself for a moment or two.

But what really makes this book is Penny's easy-going writing and the way she makes you feel like one of them rather than just an observer. I need to start my own knitting group and find these awesome people for myself!

If you're ever on the lookout for light and quick pick-me-up romance I highly recommend Friends Without Benefits!

“Road trips can either suck monkey balls or, with the right person, they can be awesomesauce with cheesy fries.”

“Boy bands are sent by God to aid women of all ages in their quest to avoid reality, but specifically to trick young women into believing that males think about topics other than sex.”

“He was hot like lava and sexy like cake. Wait, like lava cake. Yum.”

About the author:
Penny Reid has difficulty writing about herself in the third person. She finds it strange and unsettling. Therefore, Penny will now switch to the first person.

I'm originally from California but now live in the Southeast US with my family. I work full time in the biotech industry as a researcher. I work a lot. I'm also a full time mom to two diminutive adults (boy-6 and girl-4), wife, daughter, knitter, crocheter, sewer, general crafter, and thought hijacker.

I don't like to sit still unless I'm writing, reading, or knitting and I usually only knit in my knitting group... or at red lights while stuck in traffic. I only read on planes (where I'm trapped). Luckily, I travel a lot for work.

The voices in my head (characters) became so loud over the summer of 2012- specifically, Janie Morris- that I was forced to write Neanderthal Seeks Human, my first attempt at a full length novel. It took me 7 months.

If I could have any job in the world it would be my job because I feel like what I do makes a tangible difference in the lives of every living person. If I could have any life in the world it would be my life. Happiness is the seed of good fortune and success. Do what it takes to be happy and be a source of happiness for others
