Alex is tired of being hurt so she's learned the lesson not to confide and lean on others. However, she can't seem to help herself when it comes to Jesse Hunt. The big question isn't if she will survive if their relationship goes public, it's if she will survive when the real truths about her family and brother come out? Or when she learns that Jesse knows more than what he's told her?
What I thought:
This is an amazing conclusion to Alex's story. There will be a third book, Braille, that will focus on the band. and while Alex might make an appearance her story has been told now.
BS1 was filled with so much pain that was still fresh, now the pain has become bearable and Alex might actually continue living. And she does, for a while. Whenever Alex's situation seems to lighten up, something else is thrown in her face. It makes for a really interesting book that you simply can't put down, it will glue itself to your hands. Seriously.
There is so many twist and turns in this book that it feels a little bit like watching a really good hockey game. High speed, fast turns, unexpected side changes and foul play, but never messy enough to lose sight of the puck. Did you get any of that? The gist is that there is a whole lot going on without being confusing. Better?
I admire Alex so much. She's brought to her knees again and again by all the family drama, betrayals and secrets and she still keeps getting up. The men in white coats would have come for me a long time ago had it been me. "The chick is a survivor" is pretty much the best way to describe that girl. She is so strong, so determined and a bit weird to top it off. I have loved to get to know her throughout the BS series.
Jesse was pictured as a broken asshat in BS1 but he seems to have gotten his life back on track, which includes his attitude. At least that towards Alex and this time I'm actually rooting for him. Yay! He's annoyingly loyal, sickeningly sweet and he's family. The only one she has.
Tijan's writing is clean cut, doesn't get sidetracked and stays focused on the story at hand. I think that's why I like it so much. Just like her characters her writing doesn't do bullshit. It never gets boring with long nonsense paragraphs, instead there is always something happening that adds to the story.
All in all this is a story of an incredibly strong woman who's been dealt a really bad hand. She's trying to figure out all the sketchy details surrounding her brothers death while the people around her doesn't really want or can help.
